A Smoothie For What Ails You
I love a good smoothie. They’re like the soup of breakfast. Everything you need whirled up in one vessel. Easy to consume given there’s not really any chewing necessary, and they travel well. I’ve been making this smoothie for myself for several years now. The recipe can change based on what I have around. In the summer, I love adding Colorado Peaches. Bananas are a great addition too, or other fruits of your choosing. I’ve also been known to toss in half of an avocado.
When you partake in a day/night of heavy drinking, your body loses a lot of key nutrients. That, combined with dehydration, are what cause a hangover. Nutrients lost while drinking alcohol include-Vitamins A, C, D, E and K, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, mostly all minerals (iron, zinc, potassium, sodium, magnesium etc). It’s a gut punch to your liver and kidneys. That’s why this smoothie is the answer to your woes.
What’s in it?
Let’s get to the good stuff. Listed are the ingredients in this version of smoothie, along with WHY they cure things (specifically an over-indulgence in alcohol). The key here is ANTIOXIDANTS. They’re found in many of the ingredients listed.
Blueberries- I use frozen ones, mainly for ease, texture, and making my smoothie cold without adding ice.
Blueberries contain: Vitamin C & K, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium, and B6. Basically it’s full of everything that the alcohol just stripped out of your body.
Beet Powder- Vitamin C, Potassium, B9 and Iron are the main benefits here, along with fiber
Turmeric- contains curcumin which is an anti-inflammatory, supports heart health, including regulating blood pressure.
Matcha green tea powder- has cancer fighting properties and caffeine to give a little boost to your morning
Moringa- there’s talk that this plant is a miracle worker. While I’m no expert, there’s several studies out there that will speak its praises. It contains Vitamins A, C, E, Calcium, Potassium, and even Protein. It’s and anti-inflammatory, and it’s said to PROTECT THE LIVER.
Greek Yogurt- calcium and protein are the main benefits here. Along with good bacteria to replenish what the alcohol might have killed.
PB Love Peanut Butter- I used Classic Creamy for this one. Peanuts are packed with protein, fiber, and so many nutrients it’s NUTS. Like: niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, thiamin, riboflavin, choline, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin E and rich in minerals like magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, iron, copper, manganese and selenium.
Green Juice- yes, you could add your own greens, and then water, but I find this is an easier application. Green things have the vitamins and minerals and antioxidants too.
Coconut water- aids in rehydration by replenishing electrolytes (potassium, calcium, magnesium)
Oats- mainly to help keep you fuller, longer. The fiber in oatmeal also helps with blood cholesterol.
Chia seeds- fiber, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and Omega-3. Watch out though, those seeds get stuck in your grill.
